The Prince´s Foundation for Building Community: the Professional Network

The Prince’s Foundation for Building Community is an educational Charity created by HRH the Prince of Wales and based in London, whose goal is a future where all of us can take part in making our communities more sustainable.

The environment within which people live affects the way they live: sustainably planned, built and maintained communities improve the quality of life of everyone who’s part of them. They help us to both live better at a local level and start dealing with the broader global challenges of urbanisation and climate change. By actively and passionately promoting traditional principles, as well as understanding the importance of building in a more sustainable way, the Prince´s Foundation sees a resurgence in striving for affordable, livelier and safer streets and communities.

In November 2012 Mario Gallarati became a member of the Foundation’s Professional Network. In that occasion we decided to extend to the British context our interest on urban fabrics and on their importance in the definition of the urban quality. This originated the first part of a wider survey, presented at 2013 ICTP meeting and entitled Towards new Traditional Urban Fabrics: learning from London.
