The project covers an area of approximately 6 hectares, located in Ferrere, in the municipality of Cairo Montenotte (Savona). The masterplan and the architectural design foresee the construction of a new residential development, with a total of n. 22 lodgings. The area consists of a large natural green slope, between the road to Case Soprane and rio Ferrere.
The project area is organized by a hillside path intersected in three points by ridge paths: on the first, is located an existing important rural building (and, higher up, the church of St. Michael); the other two are essentially “empty”, apart from a small agricultural building semi-ruined. The same hillside path organizes fabric land. Basing on the analysis of the characteristics of similar settlements, the project identifies the two areas located at the nodes of the path network as preferential sites for the organization of the new settlement.
The new buildings are developed along a hillside axis and are arranged to form a discontinuous linear tissue concentrated around these two areas.
The vehicular entrance to the intervention takes place from the road to Case Soprane, just above the church of San Michele. From this access, the project provides a new vehicular traffic at the service of the settlement, which develops according to the topography of the place to reconnect in a second entry on the same public road. Such road network, in correspondence of the two nodes of the territorial plant, opens in two green squares around which the new buildings will concentrate.
The new residential core, whose structure has been studied in reference to the more general character of the landscape context, consists of a series of buildings with volume up to 600 cubic meters, compounds in general of two units each. In reference to the local historical context, prevalent building types appear to be two- family “rural court houses”, built on two floors with separate entrances. All units will be equipped with outdoor appliances, courts and private gardens, covered and uncovered terraces, in accordance with the typological and formal context.
The arrangement of green areas is designed with special attention to detail solutions, the choice of materials, equipment (lighting, furniture, etc.) and with the planting of species of tall trees typical of the place (chestnuts, oaks, etc.).
