The castle of Cairo Montenotte in Val Bormida, in the province of Savona, was built between the XIth and XIIth century by the feudal family Del Carretto. It is characterized mainly by the dominant position, which allows its identification from a large surrounding area, despite the few structures still standing. The intervention, financed with POR-FESR 2007-2013 funds, aims to improve accessibility and fruition of the Del Carretto castle, with a potential catchment area that goes far beyond the municipalities’ territory.

In the Castle of Cairo Montenotte, the intervention consisted in the realization of a new underground service building, destined to provide support to touristic activity and events that will be organized in the castle. The service building was built inside the embankment hold by the stone wall overlooking the inner square of the Castle. The new underground rooms have green roof and are distributed by a small open courtyard, reached by a tunnel connected to the retaining wall. The courtyard is arranged on two orthogonal axes: the first corresponding to the path that connects the tunnel entrance to the staircase leading to the covering; the second corresponding to the accesses to the two separate areas of the building, the warehouse and the service building itself.
